New Tariff Reductions For India and Bangladesh Encouraging for US Importers

Even as the global tariff situation remains volatile, especially in light of the new Supreme Court ruling revoking some of regulations, the last few weeks have brought positive news for North American importers of home textiles products who look to source out of Asian countries.

First the Trump administration announced earlier this month it had reached an agreement with India to reduce the rate on tariffs to as low as 18 percent on home and apparel products effective immediately. It had been as high as 50 percent for some products since new measures were put into effect last year. India is the second largest source for the American market for such products as bedding, bath and window coverings.

This was followed almost immediately by a similar reduction in the tariff rate on goods from Bangladesh. The new rate, 19 percent, is down substantially from the previous rate of 37 percent. The southeastern Asian nation is a much larger of exporter of apparel than home but continues to gain share in home goods like bath towels and window covering.

After the roller coaster ride of global sourcing over the past year things can continue to change but these developments have to be seen as good news for American importers looking for more stability in the marketplace. Read more

Why We Love LA for the Home Textiles Sourcing Show

Famous songwriter Randy Newman sang how much he “loved LA,” but importers, exporters, sourcing nations and others in the home textiles industry may be singing the same tune when the Home Textiles Souring Show lands in the big Southern Californian this summer for its debut event.

The show has been a staple of the East Coast show circuit for years and will now be bringing its sourcing opportunities to LA July 21 to 23 at the California Market Center in downtown Los Angeles. It will be co-located with Texworld Los Angeles and the Apparel Sourcing events. Key members of the industry being targeted are designers, buyers and product development specialists in the high-quality home textiles, fabrics and materials sectors.

“The LA marketplace is the home to some of the most important home textile buyers in the country, with a strong presence of brands known for innovation, design and premium sourcing standards,” show organizers Messe Frankfurt said in announcing the event.

“We invite the industry to connect with some of the West Coast’s most recognized names, including Parachute Home, California Collective, Raoul Textiles, Williams-Sonoma Home and Serena & Lily.” They noted that California represents the largest regional concentration of home textile buyers in the US, 19 percent of the national market. When combined with New York and New Jersey, that number climbs to over 35%, making Home Textile Sourcing Los Angeles a strategic next step for international suppliers seeking to expand their reach across the American market.
